Escape Room Team Building: A Guide for Work Groups
An escape room is one of the most effective team-building activities because it forces a team to communicate, delegate and solve problems together against a 60-minute clock. You see how people really work together, and everyone leaves with a shared story. Escape Quest runs gold rush–themed escape rooms in Takapuna, Auckland, and on Shotover Street in Queenstown, built for teams of 2 to 8 per room.

Why does an escape room work for team building?
Because nobody can solve the room alone. Clues are spread around the room, puzzles depend on each other, and success comes from sharing information quickly.
In one hour, your team practises:
Communication – calling out what you’ve found so others can connect it.
Delegation – splitting up to work several puzzles at once.
Leadership under pressure – someone usually steps up to keep track of progress, and it’s not always who you’d expect.
Listening – the quiet person in the corner often holds the missing piece.
Which Escape Quest room should your team choose?
Choose a moderate room for mixed or first-time teams, and a high-difficulty room for experienced or competitive groups. All rooms are set in New Zealand’s 1860s–70s gold rush and based on real crimes, places and people.
Location | Room | Difficulty |
Takapuna | Gangster’s Gambit – The Great Gold Escape (formerly Stick Up in the Pub) | Moderate |
Takapuna | Gold Heist in the Gold Rush | Moderate |
Takapuna | Murder in Thames | High |
Queenstown | Gold Heist in the Gold Rush | Moderate |
Queenstown | Jackpot in the Miner’s Cottage | Moderate |
Queenstown | Murder in the Prince of Wales Hotel | High |
How do you run escape room team building for a larger group?
Split into teams of 4–8, run rooms at the same time, and compare finishing times at the end.
Mix the teams on purpose. Put people from different departments together to build new connections.
Run rooms in parallel. Teams start at the same time, then compare results on a leaderboard.
Rotate with other activities. For bigger groups, combine escape rooms with VR, laser tag or the Outdoor Escape Adventure at Thrillzone, which shares the Takapuna and Queenstown venues and can host groups of more than 200 people.
Debrief for 10 minutes. Ask each team what worked, what didn’t, and who surprised them.
What’s included and how long does it take?
Each game is 60 minutes, and you should allow about 1.5 hours in total for the briefing, the game and photos. A Game Master briefs your team, keeps an eye on progress and can offer hints. Emergency exits stay accessible at all times.
Every team gets a free photo: a Victorian-style 1860s team photo in Queenstown, or a green screen photo in Takapuna.
Prices are per person and depend on team size: from around NZ35–49in Aucklandand, NZ45–59 in Queenstown. Check the website for current group rates.
Is an escape room right for every team?
Escape rooms suit most teams, including people who don’t think of themselves as “puzzle people”. The rooms are built to be accessible for everyone, and the Takapuna venue has lift access via the Lake Road entrance.
If your group is very large or prefers something more physical, pair the escape room with an active game at Thrillzone, or try the Outdoor Escape Adventure around the streets of Takapuna or Queenstown.
